We continued to honor James and Abigail Campbell's legacy of philanthropy by investing in our community.
In 2008, James Campbell Company continued to honor the legacy of philanthropy established more than 100 years ago by James & Abigail Campbell, committing more than $522,000 in grants to support community organizations. When combined with nearly $652,000 contributed by the family-sponsored James & Abigail Campbell Family Foundation, total giving was nearly $1.2 million.
Education, particularly in the Leeward area, is one of the priority areas for both the Campbell Company and the Campbell Family Foundation. In 2008, they contributed more than $300,000 to area schools for scholarships and innovative educational initiatives. Two notable examples are Kapolei High School’s Ho’ola Leadership Academy, the first in the state to use Hawaiian cultural practices to help students reach academic success, and the parent-led conversion of Kamaile Elementary School into a charter school, Kamaile Academy, that teaches the “whole child” through programs that stress Hawaiian culture, family and community values.
They also made joint grants of $100,000 to the Malama Learning Center, which was part of their $500,000 multi-year commitment for development and construction of this innovative community learning center. The Center, which will be located on the Kapolei High School campus, is dedicated to promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable living in Hawai’i through art, science, conservation and culture.
Two other sustainability programs received support from the Foundation with grants totaling $45,000. The model farm programs in Wai‘anae, Ma‘o Organic Farm and Ka‘ala Farm, teach young people how to grow healthy crops and care for the land, using cultural practices that restore the balance between the land and the people.
